Magic Tricks
I’m not interested in actually tricking anyone, so I always reveal the methods behind all my magic tricks.
If I showed you a magic trick and you'd like to know how to do it yourself, send me an email reminding me which one/s I showed you and I'll send you the instructions or a link to whichever tutorial video I learned it from myself on YouTube.
If you'd like to see/learn more free magic, juggling, etc. then come find me.
And yes, I can be booked ahead of time if you have my contact details.
I do many way cooler things than just magic tricks and juggling, though. So let me know what you're interested in, or ask what's available.
FAQ:
- How did you do that?
- I'm happy to teach you the magic trick. No strings attached (or smoke, mirrors or magnets). Just remind me which trick I showed you.
- How do you do the card trick?
- Most of my tricks are card tricks. You're going to have to be more specific. “The one where you guessed my card/all our cards.” is still not specific enough, sorry. Give me just a tiny little bit more detail and I should be able to figure out which one it was.
- Are magic tricks real magic?
- No. That's why it's called a “magic trick”. It's an illusion. It's a fun puzzle to solve.
- Are you cheating?
- Yes. That's the idea of a “magic trick”. The spectator agrees to be tricked for their enjoyment, and the magician is supposed to be honest about the fact that it's a trick.
- Are you psychic?
- I don't use any psychic abilities in any of the “mind reading” tricks, if that's what you're asking. It's mostly maths or something simpler anyone can do.
- Do you ever do real magic?
- No. By its simplest definition, real magic can't exist.
- Do you do black magic?
- No! That's a demonic deception. Please stay away from that or it will destroy your life forever with no rest from terror! Only Jesus can save you from it.
- Do you know the game Black Magic?
- Yes, and happy to play it with you.
- Do you believe in star signs/horoscopes/astrology/tarot card reading/palm reading/fortune telling/divination/asking the universe/etc.
- No. That stuff might seem harmless, but it's deceptive and gets people into trouble when they let it influence their lives.
- What about miracles?
- That's God's power to use as He decides. You can ask Him to do one if you have a strong enough relationship with Him. But you must serve Him, not the other way around. So it's nothing like magic at all. Totally worth it, though. Best decision you will ever make!
- Are you Jesus?
- Do you have a magician stage name?
- “The Dream Lord” is my favourite so far. Someone on the street started calling me that because of my expertise on dreams, which I'm far more excited about than magic anyway. I haven't given myself a stage name, because it's still mostly for fun, so I just give people my regular name. However, people on the street spontaneously started giving me their own nicknames. They used to call me “The Dinosaur Man” for a few years, then “The Juggling Man”, then “The Magic Man”, then “The Magician”. Strange how everyone seems to be in sync like that. I like them all, but my current favourite is “The Dream Lord” (which only that one person calls me whenever he sees me) as I feel it describes me the best. Pity it's also the name of a “dark” Doctor Who villian. Oh well!
- Have you been on Penn & Teller: Fool Us?
- No. I do have at least a couple of ideas that I would like to see Penn and Teller's reaction to, but that's for the very distant future, if at all. Tricks that fooled them in the past usually didn't fool me the first time I saw them, so I'm pretty confident I have a shot at fooling them. However, success isn't really about fooling them. That's not truly what the show is really about. It's rather about showcasing lots of magicians. I don't need fame, so I'm not planning to go on there anytime soon.
- Why don't you go on Australia's Got Talent and become famous?
- There are a few reasons. The short answer is: Because I don't want to.
- Why don't you use this or your many other skills/talents to become rich?
- Why don't you let people on the street give you money when they try to?
- Because it's for fun and making friends, and I don't want anyone to think I'm busking, especially anywhere where I don't have a busking license. If I were to be asked by an authority to stop showing someone a magic trick and to leave because they think I'm busking or soliciting or anything else I'm not doing, then that's not fun for anyone, and we all miss out. So while I deeply appreciate the gesture, please hold onto your cash.
- Can I hire you for a party?
- Do you play blackjack?
- No. I find it boring, sorry.
- Do you count cards?
- No. That's a different kind of skill. And no, I'm not interested in learning it.
- Are you banned from casinos?
- No. However, I would be happy if casinos were banned from this country, as I know too many people who've lost all their life savings to them. I don't visit casinos as I find myself opposed to them morally, so please don't invite me to one.
- Why do you do this [magic tricks]?
- It's fun!
- People say it brings them joy. I certainly hope so!
- I've made a lot of cool new friends doing it.
- It also gives me an opportunity to help people to think critically so hopefully they don't fall for any deceptive traps in their future.
- In certain places it helps to build community, to keep young people out of trouble (it has often cancelled scary fights), and to connect people to God and to each other.
